Older People

The UK has an ageing population – in the 2001 Census, the number of people over the age of 60 was higher than those under 16 for the first time on record.

The Labour Government has failed to address the challenges posed by the changing demographics of the UK and has all but abandoned the older generation.  Decades of neglect have left the basic state pension pitifully inadequate, meaning that the average pensioner is unable to heat their house adequately, or enjoy retirement.

Liberal Democrats will deliver a decent, earnings-linked state pension to help older people out of poverty and into a healthy, fulfilling retirement.  Liberal Democrats recognise that older people have a valuable and essential contribution to make to society; in employment, in the community and through voluntary services. Liberal Democrats are committed to creating communities in which everyone feels safe, welcome and can live in dignity without fear.
