The Liberal Democrats work with the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) in order to promote democracy in transitional states in Eastern Europe and Europe’s neighbours, the Middle East and Africa.
The grant given to the party by the WFD allows us to work with sister Liberal parties in order to promote party development, fundamental for any functioning democracy in the three core regions. The Liberal Democrats currently hosts the secretariat of the Africa Liberal Network. For more information about our work in Africa, contact nick.branson@libdems.org.uk. Throughout the three regions, we work to promote the engagement of women and youth in the political process; and to strengthen parties, not just at the state level, but also at the regional and local levels.
In addition to the WFD programme, the Liberal Democrat International Office also coordinates the international relations of the party through membership of Liberal International, a worldwide federation of Liberal parties, and also the European Democrat and Reform Party, a European network of Liberal parties.
Parties, and organisations interested in discussing our Westminster Foundation Democracy programme should write to: International Office, 4 Cowley Street, London, SW1P 3NB, or contact Paul Speller, Head of International Office at paul.speller@libdems.org.uk or Natalie Darby, International Programme Officer at natalie.darby@libdems.org.uk
